School Lunches

Some children are eligible for free school meals. If you are a parent / carer in receipt of one of the following benefits, your child may be entitled to free school meals.

Qualifying incomes

You, or your partner, need to be in receipt of one of these qualifying incomes:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Income related Employment Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit with an annual income that does not exceed £16,190.
  • Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

Working Tax Credit is not a qualifying income. However you can also get free school meals, if you are entitled to a Working Tax Credit ‘run-on’ payment for four weeks after stopping work or reducing working hours to under 16 hours a week.

Children who receive income support or income based jobseeker’s allowance in their own right are also entitled to free school meals.

To claim Free School Meals you will need to get in touch with your Local Authority office. You will need to have proof of entitlements to benefit.
